Live. Work. Play. Repeat in Sunset Harbour District of Miami Beach

Live in Sunset Harbour, Miami Beach

I love the Sunset Harbor area of Miami Beach.  It is a non-touristy part of Miami Beach, right before you get on the Venetian Causeway.  I have been going there for years, when it was just a bunch of auto repair warehouses with a great Italian restaurant, Sardinia.  Then came Scott Robins with his vision for the neighborhood.  Soon Barceloneta and Pubbelly Sushi moved in and the locals started coming.  Needless to say, it is no longer full of auto repair warehouses, though there are a few.  Now, new, fun, tasty restaurants, boutique clothing shops, yoga & pilates studios line the streets.  Popular workout and hangout spots like Flywheel and Panther Coffee, as well as both Publix and Fresh Market are here.

Work in Sunset Harbour, Miami Beach

For your working convenience, and a really short commute if you live here, there is buro, the community building co-working space.  Or you can work at any of the shops, restaurants, warehouses, or offices nearby.  Finally, and probably most importantly, if you live and work in Sunset Harbour, you don’t have to go too far to play.

Play in Sunset Harbour, Miami Beach

In addition to all of the shops, restaurants and workout places, Sunset Harbour is surrounded by water, spas, parks, running and walking paths.  Paddle board or kite surf in the harbor and if boating is your pleasure, there is the Sunset Harbour Yacht Club.  So, whether you are looking for a new place to live, work or play, or want a charming place where you can do all three, check out the Sunset Harbour District.  You won’t be disappointed!

Beautiful Morning on the Bay, Thanks to Shake-A-Leg!

A friend invited me to go on a kayak ride in the Grove today and I eagerly agreed –any excuse to get out on the water!  We rented kayaks from Shake-A-Leg;  paddled around the islands; got in a decent workout while catching up, enjoying nature and the Miami skyline; and made it back in time for my 11:30 showing.  I can’t wait to go back.

If you have heard about  Shake-A-Leg, you are aware of the great work they do helping people with disabilities enjoy sailing and other water activities.  What you may not know is that they also  rent kayaks, sailboats, motorboats, and paddle boards to the general public;  are a fantastic venue for corporate events;   and offer sailing lessons, after school activities and summer camps

I highly recommend you  go visit Shake-A-Leg and feel any stress melt away as soon as your paddle hits the water.  It is a great way to spend a couple of hours, the whole morning, or afternoon, appreciating this organization and the beautiful place we are lucky enough to call home.

Village of Pinecrest Passes Resolution To Protect Matheson Hammock

Matheson Hammock Marina

At a special Village council meeting this evening, a resolution was passed stating opposition to the proposed boat storage facility at Matheson Hammock Park. Council members felt that the county’s Parks Department did not provide the public and surrounding municipalities with opportunity to provide input to their Request For Proposals for dry boat storage at the park.

Although the developer said that opposition was premature since impact studies had not been conducted, it was specifically because of the lack of information available about the impacts of the proposed structure, which is completely out of scale for the park in its sheer size (500 feet long and 50 feet high!), that the Village passed the resolution.

Matheson Hammock Park is a park used by many residents and visitors in Miami-Dade county and the addition of any structures should proceed slowly and with public input.  It is, after all, supported by our tax dollars and admission fees.

Deering Bay – Relaxed, Luxurious, Country Club Living

Beautiful Views

I feel like Deering Bay has been forgotten among all of the hoopla regarding bargains on Brickell, Biscayne, and the Beach.  I know there have been and still are some great deals in these urban areas, but if you are looking for a  little more relaxed pace, take a look at the condominiums and villas in the various buildings in the Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club community.  These are spacious units,  most with water views, and are surrounded by an Arnold Palmer Signature golf course.   Located in the southern part of Coral Gables, it is one of the best public and private school districts in Miami-Dade county and is close to both the Falls and Dadeland Malls.  If you would rather live in a single family home, Deering Bay has those too.  They also have a small boat marina as well as one for large yachts, tennis courts, pools, gyms and a restaurant with a Sunday Brunch that is delicious!

Bimini Bay Just A Short Flight Away

Wreck on Bimini
Wreck on Bimini

One of the things I love about South Florida is how easy it is to fly to other places.  A couple of weekends ago, some friends invited my husband and me to Bimini Bay for a long weekend.  It took me longer to drive from the office to Tamiami airport than the 23 minute flight on LuxAir Charters from Tamiami to Bimini!

The crystal clear blue water, local hospitality, laid back atmosphere and Kalik beer made a three day weekend feel like a weeklong vacation.

Boca Chita Lighthouse – Where’s JWo Answer

Boca Chita LighthouseWhat do wealth, power, death, and an elephant have in common?  They comprise part of the colorful history of  Boca Chita Key, where the Boca Chita Lighthouse is located.  Although not a true lighthouse, it is the most popular structure on the small island.  It was built by Mark Honeywell, the founder of Honeywell, Inc. and a previous owner of this once private island.  Now owned by the U.S. National Parks Service this  island in Biscayne Bay is a popular spot with boaters.
