Miami's Cultural Arts Season Is Just Around The Corner

Okay, Miami’s art scene has grown up a lot since I moved here from San Francisco over 21 years ago.  Now there are concerts, monthly art walks, symphonies and a variety of art programs year round.  However, with the cool weather teasers that usually start in October, so does Miami’s main season of the arts.  Here is a list of things to do in October to get you started.

The New World Symphony kicks off their WALLCAST Concert series on October 6 with The Russian Musical Soul.  This popular series runs from October through April and is FREE!

UM’s Frost School of Music kicks of  Festival Miami on October 2.  This annual music festival runs through November 4 and consists of a wide range of music concerts.

Pinecrest Gardens kicks off their annual Jazz Series with South Florida Jazz Orchestra’s Great American Songbook on October 27.  Prior to that, FIU’s Latin Jazz Ensemble starts their first of four concerts at gardens on October 10.

Pinecrest Gardens also kicks off their movie series with Chick Flick Wednesdays and Family Night Fridays.

The Miami City Ballet opens their 2012-2013 season on October 19.

Pinecrest Gardens – Answer to Last Week's Where's J Wo?

Pinecrest Gardens, the site of the old Parrot Jungle on Red Road in the Village of Pinecrest, is more than a beautiful tropical garden.  It could also be considered the Village’s downtown.  Since the Village’s borders are US 1, Red Road, 136 Street and 88 Street, there weren’t many areas to create a Village Center when the Village first incorporated in 1996.  Today, Pinecrest Gardens hosts a weekly farmer’s market, a jazz series, classical concerts, art exhibits, plays, a horticultural series, movie nights, food tastings, and so much more.  Couple it with the Village Community Center and the Library and it is definitely the place to hang out in Pinecrest.

Happy Labor Day!

Rosie the Riveter

I know that Labor Day is a celebration of the American worker and the huge contribution labor makes to the prosperity and success of  our country.  I didn’t remember much from my history class about the history of Labor Day, so I looked it up.  Interesting, but then I came across Thebar.com Labor Day Drinks and spent way more time on that site.  Based on the number of reviews, I thought about trying the Bulleit Bourbon Lemonade.  I reconsidered because I figured any drink that has a misspelling as part of it’s  name should probably be avoided.  I thought the Baileys Shiver would be a good choice, since it is a gazillion degrees in Miami today.  I was going to add protein powder to offset the horrific number of fat and calories but then saw the Buchanan’s with Coconut Water.  Coconut water has become such a hot sports drink, it sounds like a good compromise….better yet, think I’ll just have a cold beer!

Beautiful Morning on the Bay, Thanks to Shake-A-Leg!

A friend invited me to go on a kayak ride in the Grove today and I eagerly agreed –any excuse to get out on the water!  We rented kayaks from Shake-A-Leg;  paddled around the islands; got in a decent workout while catching up, enjoying nature and the Miami skyline; and made it back in time for my 11:30 showing.  I can’t wait to go back.

If you have heard about  Shake-A-Leg, you are aware of the great work they do helping people with disabilities enjoy sailing and other water activities.  What you may not know is that they also  rent kayaks, sailboats, motorboats, and paddle boards to the general public;  are a fantastic venue for corporate events;   and offer sailing lessons, after school activities and summer camps

I highly recommend you  go visit Shake-A-Leg and feel any stress melt away as soon as your paddle hits the water.  It is a great way to spend a couple of hours, the whole morning, or afternoon, appreciating this organization and the beautiful place we are lucky enough to call home.

Miami Spice Is Back – Two Months of Great Restaurants

Miami Spice is worth staying in, or visiting, Miami during the hot months of August and September.  In addition to the daily lunch and dinner specials offered at many of  our best restaurants, some of the participants are offering happy hour specials.

There are so many participating restaurants this year, it is going to be hard to choose.  If you live here, be adventurous and try a new restaurant, maybe even outside of your immediate neighborhood.  If you are visiting, try Pubbelly and Barceloneta Bistro on Miami Beach; Atrio Zuma and db Bistro Moderne in Downtown/Brickell; Ortanique and Graziano’s in the Gables; and one of my absolute favorites, Two Chefs in Pinecrest.  Their desert souffles alone are worth the visit.
