6 Places To See Free Art In Miami – North

The art starts on the outside of ICA MIAMI

With cooler weather and Miami’s “in” season almost here, I thought it might be appropriate to give us all a jump start on Miami Art Week, by listing some places where we can see art.  Year round.  In our own back yard.  Without crowds. For FREE!

Other than the obvious Wynwood, there are so many places to see art in Miami.  Thanks to Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places and astute business owners who also happen to be art aficionados, there are plenty of places to see art in Miami.  In no particular order, and by no means all inclusive, here are a few of my favorites:

Aventura Mall art collection – Better known for world class shopping, Aventura Mall has an extensive and impressive art collection

Institute of Contemporary Art – In the Miami Design District, this museum is ALWAYS free.  The art installations are sometimes trippy, but always thought provoking.

Miami Beach – I think the ocean and colorful life guard stands on the beach are art enough, but Miami Beach Art in public spaces include sea inspired as well as modern and art deco pieces.

Miami Design District Art Tours – In addition to being able to see great, fun architecture for free as you stroll through the MDD, they have regular art tours in conjunction with Arts Encounters.

PAMM – Perez Art Museum Miami free second Saturdays.  The second Saturday of each month you get to see their art exhibits for FREE!

Is your favorite free art space in the northern part of Miami-Dade not on the list?  Please share it with us!

Is Veganism Going Mainstream?

Vegan Design by Deborah DiMare

The other day I went into Marshalls and saw a whole display with purses.  I thought it was a bit strange, since this particular display was front and center and quite a bit away from the other racks full of purses.  As I looked closer, there was a sign that read Vegan Purses.  Now it made sense.  Marshalls was making it easier for vegan shoppers to identify purses that coincide with their vegan values.

Apparently, many businesses applied Forbes’ advice in Here’s Why You Should Turn Your Business Vegan in 2018.  Although some industry leaders and innovators started well before 2018, the trend has definitely increased and become more visible this year.  The number of vegan restaurants in Miami continues to grow with Planta opening and joining a list of other vegan eateries.

In addition to retailers and restaurants, other businesses are also finding a niche with vegan consumers.  One of my favorite local designers, Deborah DiMare, is a leader in the vegan design space and her interiors, pictured here, are gorgeous.

So, in answer to my original question “Is Veganism Going Mainstream”, I think the answer is:  “It’s already it already has”.

My Favorite Painting At PAMM

Island (See-escape) 2010

This painting by Cuban artist Yoan Capote is mesmerizing and my iPhone photo does not due it justice.  It is extremely large and is the first object I saw when I walked in the room at PAMM where it was being exhibited.  I stared at it from a distance for quite a while, looking at the details of the waves, and relaxing with the color of the sky.  A friend and I approached to get a closer look and agreed that it was our favorite piece in the current exhibit.  We strolled around the rest of the room and the one next door and then came back to this one for a second look.  This time, I approached it from the side and was dumbfounded.

Island – Oil, nails & fishhooks on jute mounted on canvas…

The “painting” is mainly fishhooks!  Genius…also a great reminder that things aren’t always as they appear.  By far one of my favorite works of art.

Perez Art Museum Miami Free This Sunday

IMG_2053If you were so busy with Art Basel and Art Miami that you missed opening week of PAMM, take the opportunity to visit it for free this Sunday.  It is a beautiful addition to Miami’s growing cultural scene.  I would recommend taking the metro  since the Frost Science Museum is still under construction.  There is a “Museum Plaza” stop on the Outer Loop.
