Okay, there are a lot of free things to do in Miami that don’t revolve around the beach or window shopping. In the summer time, free days are offered at a variety of local venues so take advantage and go explore our home town.

Looking for something to do with the family this weekend? Start out tomorrow with a fee-free P.L.A.Y Saturday at Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay. P.L.A.Y stands for Preservation, Learning, Adventure, Year-Round and the day incorporates all of these in a beautiful, bay-front setting.
I will be spending the 4th of July at a friend’s house, celebrating her birthday. If you don’t have plans for the day, here are some ideas on where to celebrate and watch fireworks:

October is also Miami Attractions Month, which is offering Buy-One-Get-One-Free deals to many of our local attractions. There are also other free events going on throughout the month. However, with the cool weather teasers that usually start in October, so does Miami’s main season of the arts. Here is a list of things to do in October to get you started.
The New World Symphony kicks off their WALLCAST Concert series on October 6 with The Russian Musical Soul. This popular series runs from October through April and is FREE!
UM’s Frost School of Music kicks of Festival Miami on October 2. This annual music festival runs through November 4 and consists of a wide range of music concerts.
Pinecrest Gardens kicks off their annual Jazz Series with South Florida Jazz Orchestra’s Great American Songbook on October 27. Prior to that, FIU’s Latin Jazz Ensemble starts their first of four concerts at gardens on October 10.
Pinecrest Gardens also kicks off their movie series with Chick Flick Wednesdays and Family Night Fridays.
The Miami City Ballet opens their 2012-2013 season on October 19.

If you have never been to the Deering Estate, or if it has been a while since your last visit, take advantage of tomorrow’s free admittance to get acquainted or re-acquainted with this beautiful historic estate. Enjoy a variety of activities and programs, stroll through the house and grounds, and visit the Artist Village and see their works of art in progress. As you leave the Deering Estate, stroll down to the people’s dock and enjoy the wildlife.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has a variety of exhibits and films throughout the summer. They also have a free Teen Summer Studio for budding young artists, but you need to apply soon. Classes start July 30.
The Cosford Cinema at UM with the exception of Quill: The Life Of A Guide Dog and Otter 501, most movies are geared to young adults and adults.
The Bass Museum of Art has a variety of summer camps, evening concerts, family days, and workshops for 7-12 year olds in addition to their regular art exhibits.
The Miami Children’s Museum has a Summer Games series of exhibits and events, the latter of which vary day by day. Thanks to a venture with Target, the third Friday of every month is free from 3-9 pm.
The Miami-Dade Public Library has a variety of activities from reading competitions for all ages to story time for toddlers and activities for teens.
Visit the International Game Fish Association’s Museum they also offer summer camps for 7-13 year-olds. If you are a Bank of America/Merrill Lynch customer, you can get in for free on the first full weekend of each month by showing a debit/credit card and your picture ID.
